Introduction to Lived Experience Leadership with WrkWll

In October 2023, we delivered one of our flagship Lived Experience Leadership interactive masterclasses to the fabulous WrkWll team. Participants learned about what Lived Experience Leadership is, the benefits and challenges of Lived Experience Leadership, and discussed realistic and powerful methods of embedding Lived Experience Leadership in their workplace and organisations. The session included multiple opportunities for facilitated discussions, as well as opportunities for those with lived experience of marginalisation to share their expertise.

The diverse and very experienced team of freelance associates at WrkWll brought very rich lived and professional expertise, and we had some powerful conversations. In advance, as part of the masterclass, we invited participants to share their previous knowledge and experience of lived experience leadership, and then we provided a summary of the discussions along with links for further learning and resources. Our inclusive facilitation focused on ensuring accessibility, challenging assumptions, and supporting everyone to have safer and brave conversations.

Emily Lomax, one of the partners at WrkWll, had this to say:

What fears did you have about engaging or including Lived Experience Leadership in your work?

“We care about doing this well, but didn’t really know what to expect. We knew we would need to challenge ourselves and to be a little bit vulnerable.”

Why did you ultimately choose us?

“Your depth of expertise in this area. Feeling safe that you would balance challenge and support effectively”

“I would absolutely recommend working with LEx Scotland. The session provided the perfect balance of challenge, support, activity and reflection, theory and action. We were encouraged to challenge ourselves and each other. The principles of inclusive facilitation were role-modelled to perfection. Ultimately, the session enabled us to identify the things we need to do better and coming up with a plan to help us to get there.”
